The title compound, C(15)H(13)NO(2), was synthesized by N-alkyl-ation of methyl bromo-acetate with 9H-carbazole. The carbazole ring system is essentially planar (mean atomic deviation = 0.0346â à ) and makes a dihedral angle of 86.5â (7)° with the methyl acetate group. Weak inter-molecular C-Hâ¯O hydrogen bonding is present in the crystal structure.
