Key messages
• Wound healing involves activation of glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, pentos-phosphate shunt, and replenishment of tri-carboxylic acid (TCA) cycle through glutamine anaplerosis. • The pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) isoform is upregulated during the inflammatory phase of cutaneous healing, mainly in keratinocytes of hyperproliferative epithelia. • In vivo, the expression of VEGF in wound keratinocytes is colocalized with PKM2. • PKM2 is required for full induction of VEGF in HaCaT keratinocytes in vitro.
