Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Endosonography-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA) with rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) by cytopathologists improves the diagnostic capacity of the EUS. We investigated the utility in the ROSE we carried out by endoscopists with training in cytopathology, to evaluate if the samples were adequate or not adequate. METHODS: Between March and October 2015, 49 patients with solid or cystic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract were taken to EUS-FNA and eight patients were taken to biliary brushing. Two endoscopists with short training in cytopathology performed the ROSE, categorizing the samples obtained as adequate or not adequate, and the results were compared with the evaluation of a pathologist following the same criteria to evaluate the concordance. RESULTS: EUS-FNA 1 (measure of kappa agreement 81%) and puncture number 2 EUS-FNA 2 (measure of kappa agreement 78%). CONCLUSION: Endoscopists may acquire basic cytopathology skills to perform ROSE and the findings are consistent with those of a pathologist. The ROSE is easy and fast and its implementation does not require a complete infrastructure.
