Interpreting Abnormalities in Routine Liver Biochemistry: How to identify patterns in test results

Abnormal liver test results indicate underlying liver disease; unfortunately, these tests are neither sensitive nor specific. The pattern of liver test abnormality can identify the cause and can direct further investigations. Abnormal test results should be followed by a thorough history, which often provides more specific clues about the cause than does studying the biochemistry.
