Impact of Tidal model-based psychiatric nursing care on the meaning of life and coping level of adult persons with physical disabilities: an action research

Abstract

PURPOSE: It is related with evaluating the impact of psychiatric nursing care based on the Tidal Model on the meaning of life and coping level of physically disabled adults. METHOD: The study was designed mixed method emancipatory action research. In the pre-action, ten physically disabled individuals having ages in the interval of 20-30 and agreeing to participate in the study were interviewed with a semi-structured interview form on the effects of disability on life and the meaning of life, and the Meaning and Purpose of Life Scale and the Style of Coping with Stress Scale were applied. During the action phase, physically disabled individuals received psychiatric nursing care based on the Tidal Model. After the action, physically disabled individuals meaning of life and the coping level were reevaluated by means of individual interviews and scales. FINDINGS: For the preliminary and final qualitative data of the research, five main themes have been determined as: the situations that make life meaningful in the ocean of experience, storm/stranding/pirate attack in the ocean of experience, life jacket / lifebuoy in the ocean of experience, ship repairs in the ocean of experience, routes in the ocean of experience. CONCLUSION: As a result of the study, the nursing care based on the Tidal Model, an increase has been seen in the meaning and purpose of life and the scores of coping with stress of physically disabled adults. It is recommended to continue using the Tidal Model-based psychiatric nursing care in research and practice in physically disabled individuals.
