Abstract

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of continuous regulation of laryngeal mask cuff pressure on postoperative sore throat (POST) after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: Patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomly divided into group E or group C in a 1:1 ratio. Laryngeal mask was inserted after successful induction of general anaesthesia. The product of laryngeal mask used in this study was Hope laryngeal mask airway (H-LMA). Group E: the continuous cuff pressure regulator was used to continuously control the cuff pressure of the laryngeal mask at 40 cmH(2)O. Group C: without the continuous cuff pressure regulator. The primary outcome was the incidence of POST within 24 h of extubation. Secondary outcomes included other postoperative pharyngolaryngeal adverse events 30 min and 24 h after extubation. RESULTS: A total of 100 adult patients completed the study. The incidence of POST 30 min and within 24 h of extubation was lower in group E than in group C (12% vs. 36%; P = 0.009) (10% vs. 32%; P = 0.013). The severity of POST 30 min and within 24 h after extubation was also lower in group E than in group C (all P<0.05). The incidence of dysphagia 30 min and within 24 h after extubation was lower in group E than in group C (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the incidence of POST can be reduced by continuously controlling the laryngeal mask cuff pressure at 40 cmH(2)O with the continuous cuff pressure regulator.
