Abstract

Disease secondary to infection by coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with a high rate of transmission and virulence, which is why it has spread around the world. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality mainly related to ARDS and sepsis. Pregnant patients are more vulnerable to severe disease secondary to infection because of the physiological changes of pregnancy, with a maternal mortality rate of 25%. Moreover, there is increasing evidence about the ischaemic and thrombotic complications that occur as a consequence of the diffuse inflammatory state and hypercoagulability related to the infection and the physiological adaptations of pregnancy. The following is a case of a woman in the third trimester of pregnancy with multiple organ dysfunction due to COVID-19 requiring management in an obstetric intensive care unit, although the patient was discharged after a torpid clinical course. It is important to analyse this case as a clear example of the multiple complications that can occur in SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy. COVID-19 infection in pregnant women, therefore, requires a management strategy by a multidisciplinary team for timely recognition and management.
