Abstract
Deaf people report difficulties using health care in this study of 91 Deaf adults who communicate in American Sign Language from 3 U.S. cities. Participants told stories of communication difficulties, and reported mistrust and frustration in their attempt to obtain medical care. Interpreters who are certified and medically experienced, clinicians with sign language skills, even clinicians who made an effort to improve communication, all had a positive impact. Many Deaf adults did not know about their legal rights or how to advocate for full communication access. More research is needed to improve healthcare access and communication between Deaf people and clinicians.
