This Pillars of Immunology article is a commentary on “A subset of CD4(+) thymocytes selected by MHC class I molecules,” a pivotal article by A. Bendelac, N. Killeen, D.R. Littman, and R.H. Schwartz published in Science in 1994, marking the discovery of NKT cells and paving the way for the identification and characterization of other innate T cells.
