Abstract
CONTEXT: Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are some of the most prescribed medications in the field of dermatology. The awareness about the side effects of TCS grew exponentially, leading to a state of fear among the general population. This led to a fear of steroid use, which contributed to a serious compromise in patients' adherence. AIMS: Our study aims to assess the prevalence of topical corticosteroid phobia in the region, as this could help in creating awareness programs regarding the safety of TCS, thereby improving the patient's compliance and reducing the burden of non-adherence to treatment. SETTING AND DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was conducted among Saudi Arabia's western region's general population between January and June 2023. METHODS: The questionnaire which consists of four sections, was distributed throughout social media sites. Statistical analysis was performed using RStudio (R version 4.3.1). Data was expressed using frequencies and percentages (categorical variables). Corticophobia was assessed using 15 items, of which responses were collected on a five-point Likert scale. An overall corticophobia score was computed by summing up the values of coded items. The final score ranged from 15 to 75. A P value of < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 549 participants' answers were analyzed. Regarding participants' knowledge and beliefs, the overall cohort's median topical steroid phobia score was 52. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that most participants fear the usage of topical corticosteroids (80.7%). By acknowledging the fear levels of TCS in society, educational programs can be implemented to reduce this fear and help these individuals to enhance treatment adherence.
