Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic entities with heterogeneous manifestations and evolution, which is why they constitute a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. In recent years, there have been transcendental changes in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases, with a better knowledge of its immunophysiopathology and long-term evolution. Unlike other diseases, the clinical manifestations are not always the most important, and we must rely on more accurate parameters of inflammation for decision making. With the advent of new biochemical, imaging and endoscopic tools, the current approach is intended to achieve less delay in diagnosis and close monitoring of mucosal healing as one of the fundamental goals associated with a favorable outcome. The objective of this review is to update the new concepts regarding diagnostic and monitoring strategies in inflammatory bowel diseases.
