Abstract

BACKGROUND: Intravenous iron supplementation can pose a risk of producing free iron in circulation as free iron is well-established in generating the free radicals that have a role in oxidative stress that reduces IDA (iron deficiency anemia). AIM: The present study aimed to study the intravenous iron sucrose in antioxidant status and oxidative stress in pregnant females with iron deficiency anemia. METHODS: The present study assessed 40 pregnant females with a confirmed diagnosis of moderate IDA with hemoglobin of 7-9.9 g/dl. Intravenous blood samples were collected before and following treatment with intravenous iron sucrose to assess the antioxidants as reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase and lipid peroxidation markers as malondialdehyde. The data gathered were statistically analyzed for formulation of the results. RESULTS: A significant increase in the levels of malondialdehyde and no significant changes were seen in the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase and levels of reduced glutathione after iron deficiency anemia management after the treatment with intravenous iron sucrose for IDA management. CONCLUSIONS: The present study concludes that intravenous iron sucrose infusion is associated with oxidative stress as confirmed by an increase of lipid peroxidation in antenatal females with iron deficiency anemia.
