Abstract

s5-2 Quantitative metabolomics (sometimes called targeted metabolomics) is an emerging branch of metabolomics that is focused on identifying and quantifying as many metabolites in a biological sample as possible.Conceptually it is similar to transcriptomics where long lists of genes and (relative) abundances are determined using microarray experiments. There are a number of advantages to quantitative metablomics over traditional chemometric approaches. These include improved statistical robustness, simpler biological interpretation and far more detailed information on specific metabolite identities and concentrations. In this presentation I will describe the evolution of quantitative metabolomics and highlight some of the techniques, software tools and databases that have been developed to enable quantitative metabolomics to be done on NMR, GC-MS and LC-MS instruments.I will also discuss some of the future propects forquantitative metabolomics and describe some practical applications and a number of useful software for interpreting quantitative metabolomic data.
