Abstract
BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children and its role in oral health has received renewed interest; however, its impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children requires further research. AIM: To assess the association of SDB and OHRQoL in 6-12-year-old children and the effect of modifiers such as age, gender, caries status, developing malocclusion, and oral hygiene status. DESIGN: A total of 150 children aged 6-12 years old were assessed for SDB, using the pediatric sleep questionnaire (PSQ), a 31-item questionnaire, and OHRQoL using the child oral health impact profile (COHIP), a 34-item questionnaire. Oral examination was performed to record the caries status and OHI-S score. Developing malocclusion was assessed using Angle's class and the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Intergroup comparison of COHIP scores in children with SDB and those without was assessed using a t-test. The association between variables of interest was assessed using Spearman's correlation. RESULTS: The prevalence of SDB was 30.86%. The COHIP score in children with SDB was 92.60 ± 12.958, and 111.29 ± 12.933 in children without SDB. SDB was positively correlated with age, caries score, and OHI-S score and was negatively correlated with COHIP score. CONCLUSION: SDB has a moderate negative correlation with COHIP scores, implying that OHRQoL was lower in children with SDB. HOW TO CITE THIS ARTICLE: Sharma SA, Katre AN, Subhadra HN.
