Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To assess awareness regarding diabetes mellitus and its associated complications in patients attending a tertiary care hospital in North India. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 300 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus on treatment for over a year. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing awareness on various aspects of diabetes and analyzed statistically using ANOVA and t-test. RESULTS: The mean awareness score was 4.38 ± 1.84 (54.71% proportion). While 93.67% were aware of diabetes etiology, only 26.67% knew about its complications. Male gender, higher education, and employment were significantly associated with better awareness (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Awareness regarding diabetes and its complications remains inadequate. Educational and employment status significantly influence awareness.
