Abstract

AIM: To examine Schutz's and Peplau's theories and possibilities for dialogue, explaining this theoretical-methodological framework's application in psychiatric-mental health nursing research and care. DESIGN AND METHODS: A theoretical, qualitative study aligned with the foundational works of Schutz and Peplau, supported by the authors' practical experience and studies related to psychiatric and mental health nursing. RESULTS: The study identifies areas of convergence between the concepts, despite their development in different periods. The intersubjective nature of psychiatric and mental health nursing facilitates meaningful encounters with others, focusing on care practices that integrate what is known with intentional actions. Interpersonal and face-to-face relationships highlight the importance of individual experiences within their lived contexts. The dialogue between these theoretical concepts underscores the value of biographical elements, personal motivations and shared experiences in the process of care, emphasising the relational aspects of nursing practice. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: This study demonstrates alignment between Peplau's principles and Schutz's theoretical-methodological framework, offering new insights into the phenomenon of care in psychiatric and mental health nursing. By deepening this understanding, nursing practice can be further enhanced to better meet the needs of patients and advance the field. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution.
