Abstract
Despite the increasing interest and investment in conducting management competency studies in various countries over the past two decades, there is a lack of systematic understanding of the relationship between competent managers and employee retention, job satisfaction, and well-being in the healthcare industry. A scoping review was conducted to identify, synthesise, and evaluate studies that examine the relationship between competent managers and job satisfaction, staff retention, and the well-being of healthcare employees. Thirty-nine articles were included in the final analysis of this study. The results confirmed that competent managers are crucial in enhancing job satisfaction, retention, and the overall well-being of healthcare employees. This review underscores the importance of managers possessing a diverse set of leadership skills, demonstrating positive leadership behaviors, and adapting their leadership styles to achieve favorable outcomes for employees, patients, and organizations. Therefore, dedicating resources to developing a competent health management workforce is critical. Health managers need an empowering environment where their personal development is reinforced by efforts from and collaborations between health organisations, higher education institutions, and health systems.
