Microstructure and antioxidation performance of porous Co-Al intermetallics synthesized by thermal explosion reaction under 1 °C/min heating rate

Abstract

Porous Co-Al compounds with different Co/Al molar ratios were synthesized by thermal explosion (TE) reaction under 1 °C/min heating rate. Volume expansion behavior, microstructure, phase composition and antioxidation performance of Co-Al sintered specimens were researched and compared. Results showed that the sintered specimens under 1 °C/min heating rate were better to maintain the original shape, had an obvious dimension and volume expansion behavior, higher open porosity, superior antioxidation performance and the oxidation time to stable state was shorter compared with the intermetallics fabricated under 10 °C/min heating rate. The TE compact with molar ration of Co: Al = 2:9 had the largest volume expansion ratio of 109.6%, the highest open porosity of 52.8% and the lowest density of 1.47 g cm(- 3) in all the Co/Al molar ratios compounds experimented in this study.
