Abstract

Carcinoma arising from the thyroglossal duct cysts is a rare entity which results from metaplastic changes in the persistent thyroglossal duct. This study highlights five cases of thyroglossal duct carcinoma accompanied by thyroid malignancy in three cases. Papillary carcinoma is the predominant subtype, observed in all five cases. Sistrunk surgery, combined with total thyroidectomy, was performed on all patients, with one patient undergoing additional neck dissection. Thyroglossal duct papillary carcinoma is relatively uncommon condition and its co-occurrence with thyroid gland carcinoma further adds to its rarity which required surgical management followed by radioactive iodine ablation therapy with thyroid hormone suppression. Timely identification, coupled with appropriate surgical intervention, is necessary for favourable patient's outcomes. Additional procedures, such as total thyroidectomy when necessary and neck dissection, should be considered.
