Development of a shop floor scheduling and allocation framework for operations management excellence using cutting-edge technologies

Abstract

Operational excellence is a predominant theme for industry professionals in the current shop-floor environment. Researchers and industry professionals support emerging technologies to achieve operational excellence. Emerging technologies help enhance production outcomes by observing shop floor tasks in real time. In the current dynamic, active scenario, industry operations teams need a more efficient operations control system to achieve excellence in outcomes through advancements in shop-floor setup. The present research proposes a two-phase strategic approach to achieve excellence in production outcomes in shop floor operations. In the first phase, the author developed a methodology to improve operational performance. The second phase developed an innovative system for efficient scheduling and resource allocation in operations management. The developed design enhances the effectiveness of production monitoring systems by leveraging advanced technologies in Industry 4.0 environments. The present study verified the developed framework by implementing it in an inspection department that worked in an Industry 4.0 environment. The outcomes of the investigation showed that the production rate, workforce contribution, machinery utilization, economic strength, the efficacy of the resource allocation system, energy consumption, and production plant floor utilization have been enhanced by 47%, 95%, 97%, 75%, 92%, 82%, and 98%, respectively. Industry personnel verified that the framework could provide an innovative framework for industry professionals to enhance functional outcomes and economic sustainability in Industry 4.0.
