Abstract
Ian C. P. Smith worked briefly at the start of his independent career on β-pseudouridine, the most abundant nucleoside modification in RNA. His papers, with Frank Hruska and Arthur Grey, were the first to reveal the dynamics of nucleic acid molecules in solution and have had a lasting impact on the interpretation of DNA and RNA physical properties.
