Abstract

Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) is a disease of the peripheral nervous system characterized by isolated or predominant damage to the thinly myelinated Aδ-fibers and/or the unmyelinated C‑fibers. In addition to the clinical symptoms of pain and sensory disturbances that are typically more pronounced distally, the reliable diagnosis of SFN requires evidence of rarefication or dysfunction of the thinly myelinated Aδ-fibers and/or unmyelinated C‑fibers. The present article provides an overview of the diagnostic procedures for detecting SFN, its possible underlying causes, as well as the available treatment options.
