Abstract

After alcohol consumption in Germany as a whole had been declining for years, there are increasing reports in lay and women’s press that more alcohol was consumed during the coronavirus pandemic. This increase was observed in particular in the group of educated women around 30 years of age, i.e., successful young women who had to give 150% during the coronavirus pandemic instead of 100%. In times that are particularly stressful for women, such as in the exceptional situation associated with the coronavirus and in view of the birth rate in Germany, which has increased significantly again for the first time in 2021, it is imperative that greater consideration be given to the use of alcohol by young female patients, especially in gynecological counseling on conception and contraception, against the background of the persistently high number of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Furthermore, contact restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic have also served as a catalyst for increased alcohol consumption among some older women.
