Abstract

AIM: To evaluate and compare bone regeneration in third molar extraction using simvastatin powder and simvastatin gel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized, split-mouth, single-blinded, single-center trial was performed in 10 patients requiring surgical extraction of bilaterally impacted mandibular third molars. Each participant was randomly assigned to receive Gelfoam soaked with drug simvastatin (10 mg) in one socket and simvastatin gel in other socket. RVG was taken after the first, fourth, eighth, and twelfth weeks after analyzing the gray mean scale value with a histogram to determine bone regeneration. On Day 1 and Day 7, pain and wound healing were measured using the VAS scale and the Landry et al. scale, respectively. RESULT: The paired t test was used to compare the two groups; individual means for both groups revealed a significant result, with the greatest mean appearing at the 12th week, suggesting that simvastatin usage aids bone regeneration. CONCLUSION: We recommend using simvastatin after every third molar operation since it aids in bone regeneration. Even though simvastatin gel is cost effective, it must be prepared fresh before use. Sustained release of simvastatin should be further investigated using different carrier methods that would prove to be beneficial.
