Abstract

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common psychiatric consequence of stroke with quoted rates of post-stroke depression ranging from 18% to 61%. Decrease of mortality in stroke patients would mean increase in the number of people living with disabilities following stroke. AIM: -To study relationship between post-stroke depression and disability - To study correlation between sociodemographic factors post-stroke depression METHOD: RESEARCH QUESTION – Does disability lead to depression in post-stroke patients? 135. consecutive stroke patients satisfying inclusion and exclusion criteria, who came to Neurology OP in JMMCRI were evaluated with MINI-Plus, ICD-10,DCR criteria. The patients were also assessed by using the Modified Rankin Scale (MRS) for disability. Statistical tools were applied and correlation between depression in stroke and disability was evaluated. CONCLUSION: 19. % of patients (26 of 135) satisfied the criteria for Major depressive disorder. Out of them, 16 had MRS score ≥ 3 suggesting higher degree of disability and dependence in depressed patients. Tests of significance also proved the above findings.
