Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Globally, many patients including children are affected by medical errors that endanger their safety. Ensuring the safety of hospitalised children is challenging especially in resource-constrained settings. The purpose of the study was to explore the perspectives of nurses in a paediatric unit on patient safety practices. METHODS: The study employed a descriptive exploratory design using a qualitative approach. Twelve nurses working in a padiatric unit were purposively selected and interviewed individually using a semi-structured interview guide. The data were analyzed using a content analysis approach. FINDINGS: The study findings led to two main themes which include ward-related and nurse-related factors that influence safety practices in the paediatric unit. Some key ward-related factors that influence safety practices include inadequate staffing, lack of logistics, and limited ward space. Nurse-related factors identified were work experience, knowledge, attitude and nursing leadership. CONCLUSION: Safety practices among nurses in the paediatric unit require attention to prevent the occurrence of harmful events. The provision of essentials at the ward level and conscious efforts by nurses is necessary in improving patient safety. There is also the need to train nurses on the essentials of paediatric patient safety.
