Abstract

BACKGROUND: The resilience status of patients with metabolic diseases and their mothers’ resilience and burnout were evaluated. The relationship between resilience and burnout scores was further investigated. The effects of other related factors, such as sociodemographic status, on these parameters. METHODS: The study was conducted at the Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Pediatric Nutrition and Metabolism Outpatient Clinic. Patients’ mothers were asked to fill out the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), while only the CD-RISC was administered to patients aged 10–25. RESULTS: The mean CD-RISC scores of mothers and children were 71.65 ± 14.98 and 67.89 ± 19.35, respectively, and the mean total score of the mothers received from MBI was 17.36 ± 10.00. A positive relationship was detected between mothers and their children’s resilience. The burnout level of working mothers was lower than that of the non-working group, and the difference was statistically significant, but working status did not affect the CD-RISC score. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to evaluate the resilience and burnout levels of mothers of children suffering from inherited metabolic disorders. It emphasizes the importance of assessing the psychosocial status of patients who suffer from chronic diseases and their families.
