Abstract

The aim of the present study was analyzing various indicators related to dietary intake and the risk factors for reduced dietary intake after gastrectomy. Through this, we aim to identify the factors affecting the reduction in dietary intake among patients after gastrectomy and, consequently, propose strategies to promote dietary recovery. Data from 206 patients at a single center were retrospectively analyzed. Dietary habits and nutritional status were compared using survey data. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with dietary intake reduction. Univariate analysis revealed that patient sex, extent of gastrectomy, pulmonary disease, and chronic liver disease significantly influenced postoperative dietary intake reduction (P < .05). However, multivariate analysis identified that sex and extent of gastrectomy were significantly different (P < .05). In particular, female patients who underwent total gastrectomy exhibited a greater relative risk (relative risk = 7.4) than male patients who underwent distal gastrectomy. Female sex and total gastrectomy are factors that influence postoperative dietary intake reduction. Therefore, when educating female TG patients about postoperative diet, it is important to increase diet frequency rather than quantity of postoperative diet.
