Abstract

OBJECTIVES: This research was done to evaluate salivary 8-OHdG, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and GPx activities in patients with peri-implant diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: A total of 40 patients having dental implants were included for the study with 20 samples in each group as Group I-peri-implantitis, and Group II-healthy. To assess each subject's clinical state, unstimulated whole saliva samples were taken; radiographic indicators of crestal bone loss (CBL), the plaque index (PI), and the gingival index (GI) were assessed. The ELISA technique was used to measure the salivary 8-OHdG level. MDA levels and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity were measured using spectrophotometry. Gingival crevicular fluid calprotectin level was determined using ELISA method. RESULT: Peri-implantitis group had appreciably lower PI, GI and crestal bone loss (CBL) score compared to healthy group (P < 0.001). The peri-implantitis group indicated appreciably greater 8-OHdG, calprotectin level, and MDA levels but lower Gpx activities compared to healthy individuals. CONCLUSION: Salivary oxidative stress levels that are elevated may indicate the onset of pathological bone loss surrounding the implant or peri-implantitis.
