Abstract

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumors arising from arachnoid cap cells. Account for approximately one-third of all primary central nervous system tumors. Several factors have been studied for a possible relationship to the development of meningiomas. Leptin, which primarily produced by adipose tissue, and its receptor widely expressed in brain tissue. They believed to have the role in brain tumor development including meningiomas. This study aim to analized factors influencing leptin receptors expression in meningioma patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study on meningioma patients between March - September 2024 in Dr. Kariadi General Hospital, Indonesia. Data collected include demographic characteristic, body mass index (BMI), and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Tumor volume measured by radiologist using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and tumor type based on histopathological analysis. Leptin receptors expression analyzed using immunohistochemistry methods. RESULTS: There were 36 female subjects with WHO grade 1 meningioma involved in this study. The most common age were between 41-50 years (58%), most patients had normal BMI (63.9%), 86,1% did not have type 2 DM, 3-month contraceptive injection (progesterone) was the most widely used (74.9%). The most common subtype was meningothelial meningioma (61.1%). 19,4% patients had small tumor size and 80,6% had large tumor size. Leptin receptors were found in all patients, 2,8% patients had weak positive leptin receptor expression, 27,8% moderate positive expression, and 69,4% strong positive expression. There were no significant correlation between age, BMI, DM, hormonal contraception, meningioma subtype, tumor volume, and leptin receptor expression (p>0,01). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that leptin receptors were found in all meningioma patients and most of them had strong positive expression. It showed that leptin and its receptor expression could be used for diagnostic biomarkers in meningiomas.
