Abstract

BACKGROUND: For the pathologic understanding of retinal diseases, direct high-resolution in vivo retinal imaging and ex vivo histological correlations are desirable. METHODS: Multimodal in vivo/ex vivo imaging of a human donor eye showing atrophic retina due to central retinal arterial occlusion, with subsequent histological examination and correlation. RESULTS: Custom built equipped retina imaging devices facilitate in vivo – ex vivo correlation and the examination of human eye tissue and acquisition of retinal images, e.g., SD-OCT. Precise alignment of the tissue enables direct comparisons of different modalities. CONCLUSIONS: The direct correlation of clinical in vivo imaging with ex vivo imaging including histopathology can further enhance our understanding in the pathogenesis of retinal diseases. However, our proposed method is currently limited due to restricted human donor tissue availability.
