Abstract

AIM: The purpose of this study is to assess the reliability of using the developmental stages of mandibular second molars (DI) as an indicator of skeletal maturity to compare it with MP3 and a known standard like cervical vertebrae maturity indicator (CVMI) and to correlate with the other. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study involved 100 children aged 9-18, undergoing orthodontic treatment. Assessments were conducted using panoramic radiographs, CVMI radiographs, and MP3 radiographs in a darkened room with a radiographic illuminator for contrast enhancement. RESULTS: A highly significant association was found between CVMI and MP3 (C* 0.967 for males and 0.971 for females), between CVMI and DI (C* 0.943 for males and 0.961 for females), and between CVMI and DI (C* 0.933 for males and 0.955 for females). CONCLUSION: Tooth calcification stages of the permanent mandibular second molar can be used as a reliable tool for the prediction of skeletal maturity.
