Abstract

Conducting a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (SRMA), which summarizes published research, is both an art and a science. Recognizing the need to enhance capacity, the Indian Psychiatric Society Karnataka Chapter took the initiative and mentored the interested author teams. This ended with the completion of the reviews and subsequently proceeded to publication and PROSPERO loop completion. The program involved peer-based learning, interactive learning, regular online seminars, regular meetings, learning from statistician experts, guidance from PRISMA and Cochrane Handbook, previously published reviews, and guidance from experienced faculty members with individual mentors supporting throughout the program. Spread over around nine months of continuous work, the program involved learning in framing research questions, PROSPERO registration, searching databases including grey literature, using Covidence software, using MS Excel, selecting papers, extracting required data, doing meta-analyses, interpreting the results, and discussing heterogeneity. Hand-holding structured schedule with rigorous follow-up of the dedicated participating team members was distinct. A successful snowballing leadership building exercise with the learned participants mentoring others will ensure capacity building on a larger scale, which is needed. If expanded, this program may enhance SRMA research output.
